Police Say to Avoid Scene of Hereford Zone Tractor Trailer Accident on I-83

Update: Accident has been cleared as of 12:35 pm.

Emergency crews are asking motorists to avoid Interstate 83 in both directions, near Old York Rd. and York Rd. in Freeland where an accident occurred on Tuesday,  just past Exit 36, southbound.

Rescue vehicles responded to the accident at around 8:30 am which involved an overturned tractor trailer.

Initial reports on emergency responders’ social media pages inaccurately stated that a car had been lodged under the tractor trailer, but according to Ron Snyder, spokesperson for the Maryland State Police, the truck driver became trapped in his own overturned vehicle which caught fire.

The fire was extinguished prior to Medivac’s arrival, which landed shortly after 9:00 am. The truck driver has been extricated from his vehicle and has life threatening injuries.

Hazmat crews are currently cleaning a fuel spill from the tractor trailer.

Maryland State Police said to expect delays and to avoid the area.
