A video that has gone viral of a 9-year-old Australian boy has put a face to the effects of bullying.
Quaden Bayles, who has Achondroplasia, a type of dwarfism, faces bullying and discrimination daily. His mother, Yarraka Bayles, posted a Facebook Live video on Wednesday, showing the impact that the daily bullying has had on her son.
She said that she has to watch Quaden around-the-clock due to threats he has made to take his own life after regularly being mocked for his appearance and height.
As of early Friday, the video had been viewed nearly 22 million times.
“I want to die right now… I’m going to kill myself… I want someone to kill me… I want someone to take me out of here,” Quaden said after his mother picked him up from school on Wednesday.
Ms. Bayles made a public plea, while holding back tears. “I want everyone to know, parents, educators, and teachers…this is the effect bullying has, this is what bullying does. So can you please educate your children, your families, your friends because all it takes is one more instant. And then you wonder why kids are killing themselves,” she said.
“This is the impact bullying has on a 9-year-old kid that just wants to go to school, get an education and have fun. But every single fricking day something happens. So is there anything that any parents or families have done to raise disability awareness so that this doesn’t happen?”Ms. Bayles said. The whole anti-bullying sh-t isn’t f-ing working.”
A GoFundMe account has been set up for Quaden in order to take him on a trip to Disneyland. By early Friday, the fundraiser had brought in over $290,000, more than $280,000 past its $10,000 goal.
